Policy Partnership on Science, Technology and Innovation

APEC’s Policy Partnership for Science, Technology and Innovation (PPSTI) envisions that the APEC region would achieve innovative economic growth by 2025. For more information, read the PPSTI Strategic Plan 2016–2025.

The PPSTI’s mission is to “support the development of science and technology cooperation as well as effective science, technology, and innovation policy recommendations in APEC through collaboration between government, academia, private sector and other APEC fora.”

Formerly known as the Industrial Science and Technology Working Group (ISTWG), the partnership was formed in 2012, when APEC agreed to broaden the group’s mandate to include innovation policy development and to intensify cooperation among governments, businesses and academia. When the ISTWG was renamed to the PPSTI, a new terms of reference outlining the PPSTI’s mandate and goals was endorsed.

Building on the APEC 2023 theme and policy priorities of Interconnected. Innovative. Inclusive, the PPSTI theme for the year is “Inclusive STI for a resilient and sustainable future,” with overarching priorities of:

  1. Addressing challenges and barriers to achieving an enabling environment for a sustainable and inclusive future and reflecting the solutions by means of science-based policy recommendations; and
  2. Exploring emerging technologies and more broadly STI for the role that they play in supporting resilience and recovery solutions.

The 23rd PPSTI meeting was held on 28-29 February 2024 in Lima, Peru. Members will convene again in August this year in Lima for their 24th PPSTI meeting.
